Pedagogical Background of the Lesson Plans

Children explore their environment innately and observe it continuously. Helmi Learning Lesson Plans are designed to encourage exploration and imagination, and they let children find the joy of learning. Children practice many important life skills through play, and learning by playing is in the core of Helmi Lesson Plan design.  Playing also helps children to learn academic skills, such as math, literature, science, and self-expression in a fun, engaging, and motivating way. Helmi Lesson Plans provide learning activities connected to children's everyday life and environment.

All our Lesson Plans have goals from the 5 areas of learning, which are based on the National Core Curriculum for Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) Finland.

Lesson Plans combine children's individual needs and learning goals into a playful and nurturing learning experience, supported by the environment and teacher skills.

The Areas of Learning

Rich world of languages

The goal of early childhood education (ECE)  is to strengthen the development of children’s language skills and abilities, and linguistic identities. ECE strengthens children’s curiosity and interest in languages, texts, and cultures. Language skills development is linked to children's cultural skills and interaction skills. Developing language skills open up new ways for children to influence, and have opportunities for inclusion, and active participation.

Diverse forms of expression

Early childhood education purposefully supports the development of children’s musical, visual, verbal, and physical expression and acquaints them with various fields of art, media, and cultural heritage.

Me and our community

Early childhood education develops children's ability to understand the diversity of the local community.  One of the goals of this area of learning is to practice different skills children need to function in the community.

Exploring and interacting with my environment

Early childhood education enables children to observe, analyse and understand their environment. Children are guided to explore and function in nature and the built environment. ECE supports the development of children's mathematical thinking and reinforces a positive attitude towards mathematics. This area of learning also includes environmental education and technology education.

I grow, move and develop

This area of learning includes goals related to physical activity, food education, health, and safety.  The goal of early childhood education is to create a basis for a lifestyle that values children's health and well-being and promotes physical activity together with their guardians. This area of learning supports skills related to self-care and everyday skills.
